Background information: Faro Convention
The Faro Convention is based on the idea that knowledge and use of heritage form part of the citizen’s right to participate in cultural life as defined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Convention presents heritage both as a resource for human development, the enhancement of cultural diversity and the promotion of intercultural dialogue, and as part of an economic development model based on the principles of sustainable resource use. Faro Convention Regional Seminar: Finland & Estonia
The Faro Convention Regional Seminar is dedicated to the implementation of the Faro Convention on the Value of Cultural Heritage for Society, drawing mainly on the experience of Estonia and Finland, but also engaging speakers from other countries. In the spirit of Faro, the event will bring together representatives from civil society and policy makers, researchers and heritage communities to inspire and support citizen engagement in cultural heritage governance and the development of additional bottom-up initiatives in this domain.
As part of the Faro seminar, the hosts organise a Walk &Talk event to get acquainted with some Estonian heritage places and communities. Participants are invited to take part in the visit to Kalamaja neighbourhood, including a visit to Kalamaja Community Museum. Kalamaja is a wooden suburb between the fortified Old Town of Tallinn and sea, once populated by fishermen, harbour workers, and craftsmen, now one of the trendiest neighbourhoods in Tallinn, with a bohemian atmosphere.
The walk will take the participants also to the Kopli peninsula, to the settlement of the former shipbuilding factory, currently under refurbishment and continue through the area formerly known as the Professors’ Village, to the Community Centre at Kopli 93 – an old cultural centre is turned into a community house, housing a local makerspace and a community garden.
The event is being organised by the Estonian Ministry of Culture, the Finnish Heritage Agency and the Council of Europe.

We are happy to support the Faro Convention by sharing our experience on digital cultural heritage and how the Big Data of the Past is an invaluable treasure for society as a whole. Our Vice President Thomas Aigner will talk about the agenda of our initiative at 14.00 EEST in Session 3: Digital Heritage moderated by Mihkel Kaevats (Head of the Cultural Heritage Department of the Estonian Ministry of Culture).
