Scope

Interreg Aurora is a Programme in the European Union Interreg community for cross-border cooperation in 2021-2027. The Programme offers great opportunities and enables new and exciting cross-border cooperation in the northernmost parts of Europe and Sápmi. Interreg Aurora has a unique feature. The Interreg Aurora Programme area is divided into two geographical sub-areas – Aurora and Sápmi (the Programme is integrated with Sápmi and the indigenous Sami people).

The goal of Interreg Aurora is to encourage cross-border collaboration, and thereby strengthening the competitiveness, sustainability and attractiveness of the programme area through social inclusion, digitalisation and just green transition.

PRIORITY 1 Smart and sustainable growth Specific Objective

1.1 Smart specialisation, research and innovation Building new knowledge networks and skills between higher education institutes, businesses and the public sector to promote the transition to a just green and sustainable economy. Specific Objective

1.2 Competitiveness of SMEs Improving micro, small and medium-sized companies’ competitiveness.

PRIORITY 2 Green and sustainable development Specific Objective

2.1 Climate change adaption Increasing awareness of climate change and find methods to be able to prevent/mitigate and adapt. Specific Objective

2.2 Nature protection and biodiversity Protecting nature areas/habitats and biodiversity. Plans, strategies and methods to restore, conserve and share best practices. Specific Objective

2.3 Sustainable mobility Finding solutions to enable lower carbon dioxide emissions from the transport system.

PRIORITY 3 Education, culture and sustainable tourism Specific Objective

3.1 Education and lifelong learning Meeting the needs of the labor market and increasing the level of education. Specific Objective

3.2 Culture and sustainable tourism

Strengthening sustainable tourism, culture and business opportunities through knowledge exchange between research and educational institutions, society, business and the non-profit sector.

PRIORITY 4 Better and more sustainable cross-border cooperation Specific Objective

4.1 Cross-border cooperation capacity building

Overcoming border barriers and reducing administrative and legal obstacles. Producing coherent development strategies and establishing reliable datasets. Trust building by people-to-people actions.

The table below indicates how much ERDF-funding is available for Swedish and Finnish project partners. The Interreg financing for Norwegian project partners is allocated in yearly budgets. Available IR-funding for 2025 is approximately 3,1 MEUR.

Available funds, January 2025

General terms: 

  • A regular project can apply: 

– a maximum of 50% of Norwegian costs but no more than 200 000 EUR (2 mill. NOK) from the IR-funding

– a maximum of 65% of EU-partners costs (so far no limit in the amount for the EU-funding).
