A database concerning painting in Rome in the era of the painter Caravaggio (1571-1610). The data is contained in ZUCCARO, an event-based information system for cultural studies, developed at the Bibliotheca Hertziana. The main points of interest are Caravaggio’s social and artistic environment, his use of the works of Antiquity and his Renaissance predecessors, as well as gestures and facial expressions. A complementary database with technical and diagnostic data for ca. 110 paintings is available inside the Institute.
