The Hessische Institut für Landesgeschichte / Hessian Institute for Regional History is a state funded agency aiming at researching the history of the federal state of Hessen and its preceding states from medieval times to the present and imparting knowledge about it to a broad audience. The work of the institute is accessible via its main data-driven information system, the Landesgeschichtliches Informationssystem Hessen (LAGIS) (relaunch in preparation, projected relaunch in the first half of 2025).
The institute has a long tradition in historical cartography as witnessed by the Geschichtliche Atlas von Hessen (published in 1984) and the Hessische Städteatlas (since 2005). The institute is in charge of maintaining a local Gazetter (Historisches Ortsverzeichnis) and provides a database of historical field name records (Flurnamenarchiv). The institute provides access to georeferenced, historical maps according to OGC standards for the state of Hessen (Topografische Karten) and individual cities (Urkataster+).
