3D Data, Application & Digitisation Synergies

TMO Synergy Grants Programme

Introduction

In the past years, many digital 3D assets and applications in the cultural heritage domain have been created. The creation and use of such 3D assets is not only a growing trend but has always also been a core activity within the community of the Time Machine Organisation itself. To further support this development, the Synergy Grants Programme aims to provide seed funding for local and regional communities to strengthen capacities in harmonising data, applying modern technologies — including 3D digitisation — and sharing digitisation practices. This three-year grants scheme, which is financed by the European Commission and the Austrian Research Promotion Agency, covers a total of EUR 70,000.

TMO coordinates the application procedure and assists the selected projects in processing data, building applications, and transferring skills. The programme is well-aligned with our vision in creating and curating a spatially and temporally navigable 4D Grid of aligned cultural heritage assets from different actors.

At the heart of the Synergy Grants Programme is the promotion of collaboration across institutions, disciplines, and regions — encouraging synergies that lead to more integrated, innovative, and sustainable solutions.

The TMO members and broader cultural heritage stakeholders will directly benefit from the practical tools developed, the enhanced workflows established, and the valuable knowledge gained through the funded projects.

Overview

Within the Synergy Grants Programme, the following three grants dedicated to 3D cultural heritage will be available within the scope of the 3D Big Data for the Data Space for Cultural Heritage (3DBigDataSpace) and Online competence centre in 3D for Cultural Heritage (3D-4CH) projects:

  • Data Synergy Grants (2 x €10,000): Digital 3D cultural heritage assets will be converted into standardised data formats and integrated into a long-term storage system.
  • Outreach Synergy Grants (2 x €10,000): Extended reality applications will be developed using digital 3D assets and tools to showcase the cultural heritage of cities and regions.
  • Training Synergy Grants (6 x €5,000): In-person workshops will be prepared to teach participants how to digitise 3D cultural heritage assets.
